For their third album, the youthful Irish band Danu has moved in a reflective, slightly country-tinged direction. There have been changes in the line-up, too; guitarist Donal Clancy (his father Liam was one of the original Clancy Brothers) adds a slant of golden afternoon light to the instrumentals, and Muireann Nic Amhranai's straightforward yet evocative alto has replaced Ciaran O'Gealbhain's otherworldly tenor. There is also a delightful...

Cikaran is the latest of the O'Maonaigh family of Gaoth Dobhair to excel in music.
There's nothing quite like the sound and sometimes fury of Brass Monkey. It's a sound that's quite archaic, recalling 19th-century street bands and troubadours. Martin Carthy contributes guitar and vocals; John Kirkpatrick adds various squeezeboxes, his own idiosyncratic vocals, and his alternating attitude of severity and whimsy. The Brass are Howard Evans, Richard Cheetham, and Martin Brinsford, whose silver horns have appeared on more British...

Dervish's music was born in countless pub sessions and house parties in County Sligo in Ireland. On Live in Palma, recorded in Spain in 1997, the band members bring the intimacy and electricity of those informal gatherings to CD. Accordionist Shane Mitchell, flautist Liam Kelly, and fiddler Shane McAleer form the melodic heart of the band, and they negotiate the twists and turns of the liveliest reel with aplomb. Mandolin player Brian...
Not only was Seamus Ennis one of the great masters of the uilleann pipes, he was also a highly regarded singer, storyteller, and folklorist. As you might expect from the title, the bulk of Forty Years of Irish Piping is devoted to his skillful playing, but it also includes some of Ennis's versions of old songs and stories, including "Don Niperi Septo," which was said to be a favorite of the blind harper Turlough O'Carolan. Ennis used a set of...

The late 1980s and early '90s were a time of confusion for Irish music. Experiments mixing ancient music with a modern sensibility that began in the '70s bore fruit with the international successes of Clannad, Enya, and Mary Black. But the fusion of old and new also led to countless recordings in which harp noodling and synthesizer twiddling was passed off as Celtic music. When Altan released Horse with a Heart, it served as a welcome reminder...

Not only is John Whelan one of Ireland's finest button accordion players, but the original compositions on Celtic Fire show that he is becoming one of its most accomplished composers in the traditional style as well. If you didn't know he wrote selections like "Jigs #1 & #2" and "Reels #1 & #2" (he does need to work on his titles), you would swear they've been played in pub sessions and around kitchen tables for generations. Most of the...

In the case of this buoyant CD, "various artists" actually means "Clancy Brothers," since there is always a Clancy or more to be found on each tune. Then again, who else do you want to hear sing "Irish pub songs" anyway? Most of the 18 songs find the Brothers joining forces with Lou Killen; three cuts feature Liam in solo performance and one features the Brothers with Robbie O'Connell. Like the Eskimos and snow, the Irish seem to have a million...
