Like a Jayhawks without the Los Angeles glitz, Louisiana's Better Than Ezra plays soulful country rock that's artful but bare of artifice. Regrouping after an independent debut and the death of its rhythm guitarist, the trio originally released the engaging Deluxe on its own, but it has since been picked up by Elektra. The band gets extra points for "The Killer Inside," a tune that quotes crime noir novelist Jim Thompson. --Jim DeRogatis
Gavin Rossdale may try his best to sound like Kurt Cobain, and his British band may strum and bang Seattle-style, and Steve Albini may produce like he never left the alterna-grunge basement, but the songs here are pure pop for now people--now being Grunge-mania 1996. The lyrics always loop around in disjunctive fits and Albini ensures the band stops and starts in discomforting style but deep down Rossdale has his radio tuned to the FM-radio hits...
Chicago's Soil burst onto the scene in 1998 with their indie release El Chupacabra. The band then signed with the now defunct MIA records, who only pressed up a couple thousand copies of the band's album Throttle Junkies. After releasing Scars in 2001 on J Records, Re.de.fine in 2004 and True Self in 2006 - all to greater and great acclaim - the time is now right to reissue Throttle Junkies.

Hints, Allegations And Things Left Unsaid is the debut album of Atlanta rock band Collective Soul. It was first released on a small indie label in Atlanta, called Rising Storm Records. This version included an additional track not on the Atlantic version, an orchestral ballad titled "Beautiful World." The album attracted attention to the band and they signed on with Atlantic Records and re-released the album in 1994 under the Atlantic label.
At heart a safe if emotive and catchy middle-of-the-road rock band, Collective Soul up the prescription on Dosage, turning in an 11-song collection that stretches previous aural boundaries with mixed results. The Southern-bred quintet is literary in its lyrical leanings and thoughtful in its deft and dynamic pop-rock songcraft. Programming and keyboards are now part of the group's arsenal. Dosage's production, meanwhile, is handled by...
The album was reissued in 1999 by Rykodisc with five additional bonus tracks, including early demos of "The Mighty Zero," "I Am a Machine" and "Liquified" as well as a cover of the Elvis Presley song "Rubberneckin'" and the previously unreleased "Grand Intro."

By their fourth album (1987), the Phoenix trio had turned into a full-fledged roots-rock band, leaving their old hard-core peers far behind and instead occupying the territory more commonly associated with the full-on boogie of ZZ Top or the Grateful Dead's wanton self-indulgence. Of course, you still had Curt Kirkwood's innate feel for the desert coming through on songs such as the rollicking "Look at the Rain" and the plangent "Crazy."...

From Aerosmith to Remy Zero, 16 stellar artists amp it up on signature songs - with a little sonic support from their friends at Fender! Rhino. 2003.
These certainly are new days for singer-guitarist Travis Meeks. A mere 18 when his band's self-titled debut hit with singles including "Shelf in a Room" and "Touch, Peel and Stand," 1999 finds the 20-year-old frontman minus his former Days of the New band mates and plus a new female singer and lineup. These radical departures could easily have spelled disaster, but 2, a year in the making, is a surprisingly mature and powerful pastiche of...

A California trio signed to a major label straight out of high school, Eve 6 plays the most potent brand of punk-pop this side of Green Day. The group's self-titled debut is an engaging mix of Jon Siebels's snarling guitars, Tony Fagenson's thundering drums, and bassist Max Collins's emphatic vocals and surprisingly erudite lyrics. These guys may have blown off their SATs to take a crack at rock stardom, but there's nothing lacking in their...
2002 release and follow-up to 98's 'Dizzy Up the Girl'. 13 tracks including 'Here Is Gone', 'Big Machine' & 'What A Scene'. Plus internet key to access exclusive Goo Goo Dolls material.
If you liked this bunch's self-titled debut, you will certainly dig the dozen raunchy tunes that populate Time Bomb. Wiry, wild Joshua Todd--a classic blues-belting, tattoo-bearing frontman--possesses a gift for irony that, while not easily gleaned, does exist. Behind him, guitars grind away, while big production by John Travis (Monster Magnet, Sugar Ray) helps create a believable street-grit feel that recalls early Guns N' Roses. The Sex...

Losing Streak is the third album by ska punk band Less Than Jake and the band's first album with Capitol Records. The album represents a slight departure from the raw sound characteristic of Pezcore and a turn toward the refined sound of a major record label release while maintaining the band's punk element and social commentary. 'Losing Streak' was re-released with 'Hello Rockview' as a double album in 2000.
Steve Roach, Kevin Braheny, and Michael Stearns have established themselves as conceptual innovators and major solo recording artists. These three synthesists collaborated for the first time on Desert Solitaire. "The Southwest desert is inviting and intoxicatingly beautiful," said Roach, "but it is also dangerous and frightening. We wanted to capture the desert's timeless beauty, and we also wanted to create in sound the more visceral emotional...

From the archives of SF's famous Target Video comes this monster release from the classic original early 80s line up of Flipper. Capturing extreme and scorching performances from 1980 and 1981, this DVD helps form a picture of the band that slowed down punk rock and made the kids suffer in the 'louder faster' days of hardcore. An intense blend of noise, punk and drone music coupled with an in your face attitude and performance style made Flipper...

Having undergone numerous not-so-subtle musical transformations since their first album in 1989, the Goo Goo Dolls have matured into a powerful trio that seems to instinctively know its way around a catchy tune. With vocalist Johnny's Paul Westerberg-influenced delivery and songs packed with exciting dynamics, the Goo Goo Dolls have really hit their stride. However, the stride they've hit is probably not going to appeal to most fans from their...

With Beck's unexpected commercial breakthrough, everyone's suddenly interested in a new kind of music best described as "slacker-rap." Although it uses the sing-song cadences of hip-hop, it's the polar opposite of gangsta rap; in both its laid-back delivery and self-deprecating lyrics, slacker-rap acknowledges vulnerability and failure. It was done first and best by Washington's Basehead, but it gets an invigorating twist on "G. Love and Special...

Following Massive Succcess with their Second and Third Albums, Fate Forced Travis Into a Suspension of the Fame Cycle Following an Accident with Drummer Neil Primrose. The Guys all Decided No Neil, No Travis. Miraculously, Primrose Made a Full Recovery and Allowed the Band Time to Smell the Roses and Regenerate their Spirits and Get Back to Doing Things as They Did in their Early Days. The Result of this Deserved Time off is the First Single...
The orchestral-pop hit "Iris" (from the soundtrack to City of Angels) proved the Goo Goo Dolls were no one-hit wonder with 1995's "Name." One listen to "Slide," the crafty, yearning second track off their sixth release, suggests the streak continues for Buffalo's finest. Not surprisingly, aspects that make the aforementioned songs memorable--warm, acoustic stylings; strings; heartrending hooks--also make Dizzy come alive elsewhere. Ultimately,...

Sheesh! For a while there, it sounded like every Podunk guitarist half-wit and his tractor-driving brother were intent on aping Seattle sludgemeisters Pearl Jam. Even the English were nicking PJ licks (try as we might, can we truly forget Bush?). Orlando, Florida's Seven Mary Three--guilty as Vedder-voiced charged--seem to have gotten the cease-and-desist message. Their third outing finds frontman Jason Ross skewing off on several nongrunge...

With their aggro music, tattoos, piercings, and dreadlocks, P.O.D. (Payable on Death) might be conveniently filed next to Deftones or Rage Against the Machine. However, like U2, whose "Bullet the Blue Sky" they cover, P.O.D. are actually a Christian-based rock band, though not overtly religious enough to scare nonbelieving music fans away. This multiethnic quartet from the Southtown area of San Diego purveys an amalgam of modern music; elements...
