Susan Williams-Ellis (1918-2007) and her husband Euan Cooper-Willis started Portmeirion Potteries at Stoke-on- Trent, UK in 1960. The production of Botanic Garden began in 1972. Susan was inspired to create the botanic line when she found some antique botanical books with beautiful artistic renditions. The early Botanic Garden designs reflected these drawings.
