Switched and never looked back
Summary:
Best phone I've ever used, bar none. This should be a baseline for every other manufacturer to live up to.
Pros:
Browsing the internet, texting, calling, anything is incredibly intuitive
Apps are responsive, phone is just snappy
Continuous updates only improve matters (recent icon movement update, the upcoming SDK release will be great!)
Keyboard is fine once you get used to it, but it takes a while (see cons)
Cons:
Keyboard is a little hard to get used to
EDGE network is slow (as you might expect) - 3G would be nice
My hair gets caught in the metal edging of the phone - Ouch!

Is it easy to type a SMS with iPhone? - Apple iPhone 8GB
hmmm... it's a tough question. To be honest, it's very hard not to mistype, even after I've been using the iPhone for a month. I may never get the same typing speed as I had with my old phone. But it also gives more speed thanks to the high sensitivity of the keypad. (Btw, I type Chinese.)
I think it's something you can be perfect by practising - I'm getting better.
Also, I love the magnifiying glass curser very much.

What's the smart way to buy?
Hey guys. I've been looking to purchase an iPhone 2g 16GB lately, and have been hunting around. I really don't want to spend more than $300.
I'm also okay, but not thrilled, with getting an 8GB. My current MP3 player is a Sandisk Sansa 8GB player, which I'm quite happy with and the space is reasonable. However, I sometimes fill it up with my enormous amount of podcasts. Therefore, with the iPhone I was hoping to even add videos to it, which would mean I'd really have to manage my space. However, if the 8GB is really a better deal, money is more important than space.
The last factor is getting one ASAP. I've been drooling for an iPhone for the past year, and since I've decided to take the plunge and get on, I feel like I want one [b:ybcqv9bc]NOW[/b:ybcqv9bc]! Probably not a good view on such a huge purchase.
With that in mind, eBay seems to be quite far out of my price range. Even old, abused 16GB iPhones go for ~$400.
That leaves Craigslist and Wigix. On Wigix, there aren't too many reasonable offerings for a 16GB iPhone[/url:ybcqv9bc]. Only one person says she'd sell for $250, but she doesn't seem to be remotely active since she hasn't replied to my offers.
That leaves the 8GB on Wigix[/url:ybcqv9bc]. I checked it out and a few people say that they would sell for $225-$250. I also noticed that 55 days ago a person bought an 8GB for $225. 40 days ago, they even sold for [b:ybcqv9bc]$150[/b:ybcqv9bc]! Now that's an amazing price.
So on Wigix, the 8GB seems to be the best economical option, even though it sacrifices some space.
Then comes Craigslist. I'd like to pick up the iPhone locally if I'm going that route. That makes Pittsburgh and Erie in Pennsylvania my top choices, as I live between both. From that, there is really only one offer that still seems available. No others have replied back to me. Anyways, this guy is willing to give me a brand new 2g 8GB iPhone for $300. I'm almost tempted to go for it, because I really want an iPhone ASAP, but then again that is very pricey compared to the $150 one went for on Wigix.
I also decided to check out the offers in Philadelphia. I found a guy who would sell and ship his iPhone to me for $275. But it's not brand new like the $300 one, and I don't know if it's safe since I can't pick it up myself. It's really also quite pricey in comparison to the past Wigix trade. Lastly, he wants notice by Sunday morning, which is tomorrow morning as I'm writing this.
So here is a quick summary of my options for all of you scanners:
A) Make an offer around $225 on the 8GB on Wigix, and hope and wait for someone to accept.
B) Go for the $300 local pickup of the 8GB from the Craigslist ad.
C) Purchase from the guy in Philadelphia an 8GB for $275.
D) Skulk around Craigslist for an excellent 8GB deal or a good 16GB one. (Every day I wait is extremely painful ;))
Some of you may find this post long and boring, and move on. However, for those of you who understand what it's like to have iPhone fever and to [b:ybcqv9bc]just not be able to make a certain decision[/b:ybcqv9bc], I really will appreciate your suggestions.

do not paypal someone on craigslist and have them ship it to you. =) that is my best piece of advice. if you cant wait another day. the local pick up would be the best bet. good luck!

I, too, feel that Apple has the best marketing team in the universe. =)
Let me start off by saying that I am no fan of Apple. I don't like the computer interface being so simplistic (by sacrificing real control and capability - much like Visa is now doing, prompting me to finally go Linux), I don't like the extreme costs of repairs and replacement parts, etc . The list goes on an on. The point being that I am saying this as a non-apple fan....
The iPhone is VERY limited in terms of what it can do. Nokia was producing higher qaulity phones for half the price before the original iPhone even came out. Even with the 3G you still can't receive something as simple as a picture message from a friend's phone unless it is emailed in a roundabout way and not sent MMS. That in itself is insane, not to mention lack of changing batteries. Why would you want to replace your battery on your own or carry an extra and swap? That's way too convenient.
As an admitted non-fan, I may be biased, but from what I here the add on costs of the new phone make it around $400 or so more expensive than the first one. You are realistically talking about a phone that is actually around $900 but with payments spread out over your contract. For less than 1/3 of the real cost of the new iPhone you can get a truly awesome much more flexible phone.
Apple is the leading company in producing garbage way behind the technical curve, slapping on slick marketing and selling it and insane prices to people who don't know any better. As someone who works in marketing, I am in awe of their prowess, as someone who works with technology daily, I am shocked at how they blatantly rip off the "aol users" out there.
"I plugged in my new magnetic ac adapter into my new powerbook to charger the battery and it caught fire."
"Huh... you must have plugged it in wrong somehow, if you want a new powerbook you can buy a new one?"
Such great service - that's an example of on of the many complaints with their tech turning into a class action lawsuit as we speak - go ahead and google it.
Competing in a market drives pricing down, and forces innovation. Apple does not really do this. I priced a 13" macbook about a year ago out of curiosity. $2,000. Laptop I bought a week later blew it away in terms of specs and screen size.... price: $600.
When you go apple you get the scaping from the bottom of the barrel and you pay through the nose for it.
I would look at the Samsung Instinct if I were you. If you reallt have time check out the offerings made in Japan, for the $900 you'd really shell out on the 3G you could buy 2 smart phones about 5yrs ahead of the best the US has to offer (about 10 yrs ahead of the crapPhone) and you would be able to use them with any service any where. Gotta love Quadband.
Ignore the typos... no spell check function... and I'm lazy ;-)
One of our guys bought the new 3G. I was able to play with it a little. The web browsing speed on the 3G is a little overrated. Not sure this will push me over the fence now given that I have to put up with missing phone features (voice dialing - important in California etc.).
I have a new one, and I'm selling my old one. But in answer to your question, "probably not." The differences in hardware are somewhat small. The software upgrade is major but free to existing owners. That said, I'm the type to enjoy every little bit of technology in my life, so the new one is worth it to me. I'm probably not representative of most users.
The GPS is clearly MUCH better, as it's real GPS. This may or may not matter to you; I found the old triangulation system to be marginally useful but certainly not for walking or really getting close to something. The new screen seems clearer in bright light. It feels better in the hand. The 3G is nice I guess, but really not a seller for me, I thought the previous speed was alright.
Overall though it's a question only you can answer. Go to the store and hold/try one and compare it to yours.
I agree with the comments above. First of all, see if 3G coverage is available where you live and your normal traffic areas. That would be the chief reason to upgrade. If you surf the web alot and you are using EDGE most of the time, then the 3G would be beneficial. But if you aren't in 3G areas or if you have access to wifi most of the time, it's certainly not worth the exra expense. I was all sold about upgrading until I heard about the additional data cost ($10) and then learned that you have to pay additional for SMS. I'm inclined to stay with my 1st gen phone.
I will not be upgrading because first I would have to sign another 2 year contract with AT&T, pay $10 more a month for data with no speed boost because there will be no 3G where I'm at, and I don't really need GPS because Google Maps works good enough for me when i need it.
The other big question is have you hacked your phone to use third-party programs. Right now I have audio & video recording on my phone, some sweet games, real instant messaging, downloadable content from the net, sketches - a sweet drawing program, and more. I would wait till the 2.0 update comes out for the 1st iphone and see what happens. But I'm 99% sure I'm not upgrading
I personally recommend against it. The contract for the 3G iPhone is more expensive in the long run than the first edition, by the tune of something like $320, which more than negates the $200 pricetag.
Only if you want to use the Phone of AT&T data or if you require GPS. The flipside of owning a 3G iPhone is you will have to pay $15 extra for the data plan and you do not get free SMS (200/month) along with the plan. If you do not require GPS and if you intend using your iPhone over wifi networks (at home/office/elsewhere) you should not upgrade.

Web speed
How is the web access speed in real life usage? I was playing with the Iphone in an apple store....it was very good due to the fact that it was running on Wifi....not sure about the GPRS network speed...this is really what is holding me up from purchasing an Iphone
I use EDGE most of the time and it is pretty snappy near where I work. In some areas of Pensacola it is very slow, but in other areas, it can be as fast as 150k - 200k.
@Birdle: There's no reason Apple or any other company should offer an "upgrade path" for people who buy one generation of a device shortly before the next generation comes out. Do people make the same demands of Nokia when an N95 successor is on the horizon?
Aside from Apple's return policy, there likely won't be much of an "upgrade path" for the current iPhone to the supposed 3G expected soon. If a 3G iPhone does indeed come out this year, the opening keynote of WWDC on June 9th is the most likely day for it to get announced.
I think that depends on what kind of sites you plan on visiting when away from WiFi. Though the iPhone can handle "just the Internet," I find myself using mostly iPhone-optimized websites simply because it's easier and faster. I go to New York Times' mobile site, Twitter mobile, RSS readers like Google Reader and NewsGator that both have iPhone-specific sites, etc.
Visiting the *real* NYT site on AT&T's EDGE? Forget about it. But again, I don't do that kind of surfing when away from WiFi, so I've never run into too many speed problems.
If you use Yahoo! mail then you can have push email capability on the iPhone w/o any special software. Yahoo! has this capability for Windows Mobile devices too.
Does anyone know of a true push email solution for the iphone? I suspect there should be one being announced during the Mac conference coming up...
if a customer is to buy a Edge iphone now I wonder what upgrade path AT&T has when the 3G iphone comes out
I think the fact that it uses a "real" browser and has zoom capabilities gives it a huge advantage over the Blackberry and similar devices which cannot render a lot of pages well. For me, I would prefer good rendering and give up some speed vs. lousy rendering at high speed.
On the EDGE network I've seen fairly good speeds. Not quite as snappy as WiFi of course, but for casual browsing it's not bad at all. I should note I am on EDGE only about 10-20% of the time.

Typing on the iphone
I went to the Apple store to try to get a sense to how easy is it to type on the iphone keyboard. I found it quite difficult to type with any speed without making mistake. The very helpful salesperson assure me that with practice and use it will be a snap. I would like to know if this is the case with you all. Thanks.
I became fairly proficient typing with my right thumb- if I am not using a terminal or writing code on it.
If you are just typing emails, sms, notes, etc, it is a joy to use. Expect a headache if you are typing PHP code :D.
For what it is worth, there's a rumor that one of the next models will have a keyboard that slides out...
You definitely speed up. What you have to get used to is just typing without looking--trust the device. It will auto-correct almost everything. After a while you type fast without paying attention to accuracy and it works.
I used the iPhone for a month. Typing did get better once I practiced and trust the suggestions made by predictive text software. However, for me, I do not believe that the typing experience will ever be comparable to a quality physical keyboard such as the one on the BlackBerry Curve.
Yes, typing on the iPhone gets much easier. For me it's faster using one finger rather than two thumbs. Plus the iPhone as a built-in corrector that correctly guesses what word you wanted even if you type the adjacent keys to the keys you wanted. Sort of like a spelling checker on steroids.
I think that it's a trivial issue - the solution is to hold down the letter before you type, and if its the wrong one rotate your thumb a little to press the correct character. But after a couple of weeks, you won't have to do that because you'll be good enough at typing on the iPhone.
One thing that IS annoying is that I can't play games online, because there is no keyboard :(
I have the same problem as you. I think anyone who has grown accustomed to typing on a Blackberry keyboard runs into this problem...for me every character I try typing into the iPhone results in an adjacent character being entered instead. OTOH I do see people who are quite proficient with iPhone typing...maybe they weren't previous Blackberry users.

i think it's easy to type in iphone.
The virtual keyboard works okay for short texts once you get used to it.
It's pretty easy, but if you have large hands (fingers), you may find it harder than a regular cell phone keyboard.
