Good, old, smartphone
I have really enjoyed this phone. I bought another because the old one wasn't syncing anymore (that part of the phone physically fell out when I used a bad off-brand charger) and I really wanted a phone that was syncing again--and a smartphone--but I can't afford to pay for data right now and mostly don't need it. If you want to surf the web the browser is way too old to be very useful, but if you want a smartphone with pocket Word, PowerPoint,... more |

Palm Treo 700wx Review
I have owned the 750wx for about 10 months, before that I owned the 700p. In general I really like the device
Pros:
Push E-Mail: For me the best feature is the push e-mail from Exchange servers. This means I basically get blackberry like e-mail service for not additional monthly fee. A lot of carriers are charging $20/month for blackberry service, so getting this for free really adds up over time. Make sure your Exchange server supports this feature though.
Applications: I really like the ability to load Windows Mobile apps on to the device. I have a bunch of applications including a GPS/Mapping App called iGuidance, Google Maps (fantastic), and Microsoft's Speech Recognition App (very cool). I also can run all my old Palm apps using StyleTap (very useful!).
Battery Life: If you turn off Bluetooth you can get 2 days of standby, but even with heavy use it will last the day and you can just recharge at night.
Speed: Internet Access on the Sprint EVDO network is awesome.
Cons:
Web Broswer: The version of Internet Explorer included is not great. I much prefer the Deepfish browser beta that Microsoft has released. I reccomend you download and install if you get the phone. It's pretty similar to the iPhone browser in that you can zoom in and zoom out of pages.
Connectivity Issue: One weird issue I have is that if you have ActiveSynch running (which I do constantly because I want real-time push), then some apps that need Internet access, such as my stock quote app, have a hard time getting through. It works but you have to do multiple requests.
Have you ever tried the Slingplayer Mobile app for Windows Mobile? Very very cool. Also, can you use the device as a tethered or BlueTooth modem for your laptop?
When I owned a Palm 650, I subscribed to Audible Air. I thought it was a great service. It wirelessly delivered the Wall Street Journal audio edition to my device every morning. I could listen during my morning commute.

I upload 3rd party apps all the time on Palm OS. On my Treo 700P, I have installed Google Maps, several stock tracking apps, and dozens of other third party apps (e.g. Firefox for Palm, an open source C compiler, a zip/unzip utility, word/excel/powerpoint emulator, an internet chess client (allows me to play chess over the internet), an HP12C emulator (for those of you who are old enough to remember HP12C's - you never forget your first HP), and dozens of others.
Re betabob's question, the 700p can theoretically be used as a bluetooth modem, but I haven't been able to get it to work. I would assume the 750WX can too since you're dealing directly with the bluetooth interface and the phone, not with the operating system. Sprint will give you instructions how to do it but they don't support it.
To make the 700p (or probably any other Treo) work with SprintPCS, you're supposed to go to Bluetooth devices on your PC, then select add a new device, pair with the phone, select the "modem" option, then (this is the tricky part) you're supposed to set up a new plain vanilla "modem" on COM50. It sort of walks you through it but it's kind of confusing. Under modem dialing options, you need to set it to dial #777, leave username and password blank.
I've gotten that far and gotten all the right icons on my desktop. When i try to connect from the PC, the phone acts like it's trying to connect as a modem (displays the data modem icon on the top of the phone). However for some reason Windows never seems to recognize the modem.
Anyone know how to make this work?
