On the issue of combining Teen with Children's books----I work in a public library and am almost finished with my Master's in Library and Information Science and there seems to be a BIG push to separate the teen books from children's books. In the library in which I work, the teen books are in their own section, but in the adult "area" of the library, rather than the juvenile area.

In general, teen books have adult content, but are just written either for or about teenagers. Some of the Young Adult books in my library are much racier than adult books and definitely NOT books that you would want a younger child to stumble upon. An angry parent is the result there!!

Since I was the one who raised combining them in the first place, I appreciate your very sensible response. I hadn't at all considered this from the perspective of a parent looking to get her child a book. I thought only in terms of how blurry the line between the two can sometimes be and that combining them might be less confusing for submitters.

Upon seeing your article and reflecting upon it, you're absolutely correct. The groups should be separate.

Wow!! Stefanie you must look at my list for the children's category and let me know what you think of that... Your Master's trumps my bookstore manager experience.... plus I have been out that area of retail for about 11 years now.

Here is my proposal for the children's root category....

Children's Category Organization Proposal

1. 8) Animals – (CE – TessaBlueSkies) Leave as is arranged by subject attributes IE: different species.

2. Arts & Music – With following subcategories
A. Architecture
B. Art
C. Crafts & Hobbies (could be a subcat here or under educational in #4)
D. Music
E. Performing Arts
F. Photography

3. Computers arranged by subject attributes

4.Educational
A. Citizenship
B. Crafts & Hobbies (could be a subcat here or under Arts & Music in #2)
C. Explore The World – with countries as subject attributes
D. Holidays & Festivals – with the holidays as subject attributes
E. Multilingual – with languages as subject attributes
F. Reference & Non-fiction – with subject attributes

H. Cooking & Food - with subject attributes

6. 8) Social Situations & Issues  proposed slight name change(CE – Stefanie10507) – with situation as subject attributes.

7.Literature
A. Action & Adventure
B. Children's Literature Guides
C. Classics
8) D. Fairy Tales & Folklore (CE – GlitterCityBooks) – with genre's as subject attributes.
E. Humorous
F. Collections
G. Poetry – with type/author as a subject attributes
H. Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror & Mystery – with genre's as subject attributes
I. Picture Books

8.Religions – with genre as subject attributes.

9. Science, Nature & How it Works – with subject attributes.

10.Series – with genre as subject attributes.

11.Sports & Activities ( Existing Categories merger proposal No current CE  ) – with subject attributes.

8) The cool symbol means existing Wigix Categories with standing CE's
The underline means proposed new sub-categories.

I did not include teens in my proposal and dropped a few categories that I initially had that were duplicated elsewhere in the catalog. It looks like the animals category stays it seems to be a new trend too. All the existing Categories CE's are NOT effected by this proposal and will stay basically where they are although hopefully they will pick up a few new categories once they are built. This is an aggregate of categorizations from about 4 sites.

If GlitterCityBooks & Stefanie10507 are around soon I would like to have their opinion on my proposal as they are the other two children's ce's at the moment.

Also did not include teens in my proposal, not sure where it really should go at the moment
Theresa

Looks pretty good, but I wouldn't put history and historical fiction together.

Hi
This is Terra, Nice to meet you. Congratulations on your educational and career success. What a great field of work. I hope you enjoy it. And I agree with you that the teen books should be separate. It's not just Nancy Drew anymore LOL.

Terra...
We could move history to the educational section and historical fiction can just be added to or absorbed into Literature...

In regards to the conversation regarding literature & classics, I agree that classics may be a more appropriate term that literature, as it allows a sort of delineation for what era you might expect the books to be from. When we are looking at incoming traffic to the category and what their expectations are, I think it is safe that the customers will be much more likely to be looking for Dante's Inferno or Hamlet than The Accordion Crimes or Interpreter of Maladies, which most users would search under fiction.

"Literature" can easily become a catch-all category (note Tessa's suggestion to park historical fiction there). Classics would not be.

History could be a subcat for non fiction and could actually have several other subs under it

nonfiction>history>American
" " >Other countries
" " >Entertainment
religion
business
on and on

as far as literature vs classic, there are distinct differences.

Just because something is classic doesn't make it literature. vice versa

my suggestion for fiction is

fiction>horror
suspense/thriller
medical/legal
mystery
paranormal
romance
classics
literature
(several other sub cats are probably appropriate here)

Also, since literature and classics can also be non fiction, then there should probably be a sub under non fiction.

Historical fiction I would place under fiction. History I would place under non-fiction. I'll personally be looking for a Non-Fiction>>History>>Military>>Conflict & War>> Wars Involving the US>> Civil War category. Of course for the purposes of this discussion we don't need to get that specific

How do we add categories to books, because I have 5 books in Urban Fiction (also known as Street Lit or Gangster Lit) and this genre type is really growing.

Send a message to wigixcatalog through your My Wigix messages. Let them know the name of the category and where it should go. You should get a response from them within 48 hours.
