How many abalone do you need to catch in order to recoup the scuba gear investment?

I was told that red abalone in California is a rare delicacy. How do I identify an abalone diver/hunter wondering around Oakland Chinatown? I would love the opportunity to meet one and learn how to harvest a big red abalone. yum yum

I have eaten abalone in Hong Kong, Tokyo,Honolulu (from Maui) and of course, the red abalone from California....In fact, I have eaten California red abalone from both the Sonoma coast and Medeocino.....They all have it's own distinctive flavors....the one with the most intense flavor ----- drumroll please, is, the one I eat in Tokyo.....they are smaller (3-4 inches)....as a result, the meat is much more tendor....I would do it butteryaki style....the biggest, of course is the red abalone from California.....they are best for serving a large party due to it's size....the best way to do it is the traditional chinese way....braised with Oyster sauce, chicken feet, pork skin, sea cucumber, chinese wine, soy sauce....yummy

Status report!

So we went to Ocean Cove in Sonoma this morning. We left my house at 5.30 am and got to Ocean Cove around 8 am. We geared up and enter the water around 8.30 am. It is very low tide today and the exposed kelp bed smelled like 3 day old rotten fish! This is a new spot for me, normally, I go to Timber Cove, also in Sonoma. The visibility was ok today. I think it's around 10 feet. I first cruised around area that's 10-15 feet deep. No luck. Nothing but rocks and kelp. I gradually moved out to area that's 15-20 feet. I started seeing Abalone. To make a long story short. After about 15 drops I limit out with three good size abs (8.5 in, 8 in and 7.5 in). :D

Absolutely...this season we did not get to make it out as much...I did not catch the limit of 24 this year. I think I have a few stamps left.
