While Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, the 1968 album that made Cash a household word, spent only two weeks at No. 1, this 1969 follow-up topped the charts for 20 weeks. As with Folsom, the San Quentin LP had to be edited due to space limitations. Now, 31 years after the fact, the show can at last be heard in true perspective. All the original performances hold up, including the album's hit single: Shel Silverstein's "A Boy Named Sue," presented unbleeped for the first time. Equally impressive are the eight restored tracks and unexpurgated between-song patter. Cash's opening renditions of "Big River" and "I Still Miss Someone" are bracing. So are four closing songs teaming Cash with his complete performing troupe (the Carter Family, Carl Perkins, and the Statler Brothers). Their gospel performances ("He Turned the Water into Wine," "The Old Account," and an early version of "Daddy Sang Bass") are electrifying, as is a concluding medley featuring everyone. Lauded singer-songwriter Richard Hawley (a former touring guitarist for Pulp, no less) made his commercial breakthrough on 2005's remarkable Mercury Prize-nominated Coles Corner--his fourth solo album and one that oozed nostalgic balladry, old-fashioned lyrical sentiment, and cinematic soundtracks in equal measure. Lady's Bridge--the name is yet another ode to his native Sheffield--mines the same seam as Coles Corner, with 11 eloquently charming songs that switch between the romantic strains of opener "Valentine" and "Roll River Roll" and more uppity numbers such as the R&B-infused "Serious" and the countrified twang of tracks like "Tonight the Streets Are Ours" and the Johnny Cash-inspired "Dark Road." Hawley's lyricism retains its coruscating, retro feel, his vibrant baritone again matched to rousing orchestral strings, climbing chord sequences, and background harmonising, creating atmospheres of dreamy fireside warmth and heartfelt melancholy (see "Lady Solitude"). The 20th Century Masters series is the best-selling single-artist line in music history and is being re-released by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) in its ground-breaking, environmentally-friendly packaging format. A first for the music industry, the standard package (both sleeve and tray) will be completely paper-recyclable, continuing the company's long-standing commitment to being "green."To further reduce the amount of paper in the Eco-Pack, the CD booklet will no longer be offered. UMe is the first North American music company to replace the traditional jewel case with recycled paperboard sleeves and the plastic tray with trays made from PaperFoam, a new packaging technology from Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, that is paper-recyclable and biodegradable. Rockabilly revivalists Kim Lenz and Her Jaguars' second blast into the past hits its mark, even if it doesn't make a distinct impression. The redheaded Texan has made some changes since she and the Jags released their 1998 debut. Newcomer Nick Curran (fresh from rockabilly vet Ronnie Dawson's band) brings compulsory speed and dexterity to the guitar slot, but also proves to be a flattering accompanist. Working out of Daniel Lanois's Kingsway Studio in New Orleans, producer Big Sandy captures that classic hep-cat sound; there's just enough echo here to give you the sense the band is performing at a high-school hop rather than in a recording studio. Guest Carl Sonny Leland shines on the keys when called upon. And, of course, Lenz makes like Wanda Jackson at the mic.
